Leipzig’s 2012 bid gets a boost from German football player Franz Beckenbauer, a World Cup winner as a player and coach, who heads the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup. He is joining a 21-member “brains trust” committee for Leipzig’s 2012 bid.
The committee also includes three members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the chairmen of Siemens and Porsche.
The first meeting, to be chaired by former German foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, will take place January 28.
