Leipzig 2012 Goes Ahead With Government Support And German Olympic Committee Warning

Although the organizers for Leipzig 2012 were given a final warning by Germany’s Olympic Committee to clean up its act because of the recent scandals plaguing Leipzig’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, the federal government has still guaranteed Leipzig’s bid.

Spokesman Bela Anda said Monday that the government “will do its share to make this support public”.

But Anda added that so far no date has been set for an Olympic summit with Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, leading bid and sports officials and business representatives. The meeting is due to take place before Christmas.

Meanwhile the bid is going ahead full steam. The sale of bid merchandise began on the Leipzig 2012’s Web site Monday.

Merchandise available includes t-shirts, adult’s and children’s caps, sweat shirts, polo shirts, windbreakers, pins, key chains, stickers and ballpoint pens. More products will be made available in the future.

Also, chain stores will be selling the bid merchandise and the Leipzig 2012 Shop will re-open soon in Leipzig’s city centre.
