Leipzig 2012 Gets New Board Chairman

Former foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who played a key role in the reunification of Germany, is now Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Leipzig’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

His mandate is to make Leipzig’s bid better known nationally and internationally. He said Leipzig’s bid would only be successful if the entire country stands behind it.

Leipzig 2012 board representatives come from business, sports, and politics, including former West Germany World Cup winning skipper and coach, Franz Beckenbauer, who is also head of Germany’s 2006 Word Cup organizing committee; Germany’s three International Olympic Committee members; and the heads of the Siemens and Porsche companies.
