Kuala Lumpur Out Of Running For 2010 Asian Games

According to published reports the Malaysian government said Wednesday it will not support Kuala Lumpur’s bid to host the 2010 Asian Games. This means that Guangzhou China is the only remaining candidate since South Korea and Jordan withdrew from the race in recent weeks.

Sports Minister Azalina Othman said the estimated $366 million (U.S.) it would cost to host the Games was too much.

He told reporters Wednesday, “the Cabinet has decided that Malaysia does not bid to host the 2010 Asian Games because of the cost implications. It is not that we do not want the job, but it is very expensive.

The Olympic Council of Asia is to officially announce the host of the 2010 Asian Games at its general assembly meeting July 1 in Doha.
