Pyeongchang Korea is bidding for the 2010 Winter Olympics, but now the co-chairman of the Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Chung Mong-joon, the most powerful figure in Korean sports, says that Korea should bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Chung said, “if it becomes viable, the host city should be a provincial city like Taegu, Pusan or Chonju, rather than Seoul”.
Chung said that economic growth would enable provincial cities to host the Olympics by that time.
“Hosting big sports events is essential for the improvement of the nation’s image and the economy”, he said, adding that this summer’s World Cup will also be a good chance to promote Korea to the world.
