Rumours of Japan boycotting the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games are “absolutely groundless” reports Kyodo News.
Chinese State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan asked Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura Monday about the rumours, saying that the rumours have been brought to his attention recently, according to a Japanese government official.
Machimura assured Tang the rumours are “absolutely groundless” adding that Japan wants to help make the Beijing Olympics a success, said the official.
But Machimura told Tang recent vandalism during anti-Japan protests in China “prompts worries” about whether the Olympics can be held in an orderly manner.
