Italy To Pass On 2012; Considers Milan 2016 Olympic Bid

As source from Italy’s national Olympic Committee told GamesBids.com that Italy will not be bidding for the 2012 Olympic Games but will instead consider a bid for the 2016 Games in Milan.

Circulating reports over the past two years have quoted mayors of both Rome and Milan claiming that they intend to bid for the highly contended 2012 Games, however the Italian Olympic Committee has not corroborated these reports. Italy will be hosting the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin.

“Milan is consulting for 2016 Olympic Games Bid” the source said.

Shortly after the 2001 terror attacks in New York, the Mayors of Rome and Milan promised to withdraw their 2012 bids, but only if all other 2012 bids were withdrawn in order to automatically award New York the Games.

It would be “…in homage to the great civil courage demonstrated by [New York City]” the Milan City Council wrote.

The application deadline for 2012 is July 15 and New York along with at least eight other cities will be competing.
