Although a city has not yet been decided on, Italy has announced it plans to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Italian Olympic Committee president Gianni Petrucci said a decision on whether Italy’s representative will be Rome or Milan would be made in either June or July.
Petrucci told Gazzetta dello Sport’s Web site, “in any case, as a country, we have the same chance as anyone else. Italy is strong in sport and, on an organizational level, the recent Winter Games in Turin were the best ever”.
Rome hosted the 1960 Summer Games and bid for the 2004 Olympics, which was held in Athens.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is deciding on the 2016 host city in 2009.
