The People’s Daily reports that sources told the newspaper the South China tiger, an endangered species native to the southern part of China, has been proposed as a mascot for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Officials in Suzhou, a scenic city in Jiangsu Province where the tigers still survive, and Longyan City, the home of another major south China tigers breeding centre, support the application.
The proposal has also been supported by foreign non-governmental organizations.
Meanwhile Lianyungang, a port city in Jiangsu Province, has applied for the Monkey King as the mascot of the 2008 Games.
