IOC Wants More Beds At Vancouver 2010 Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is asking for an additional 350 athletes’ beds in the Whistler Athletes’ Village at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which would cost an additional $10 to $20 million.

The Whistler Question reports that Whistler’s Mayor Ken Melamed said it was unclear where Whistler will get the additional funds. He said, “we aren’t prepared to pay for it. VANOC isn’t sure how they’re going to pay for it and the IOC isn’t sure where they’re going to come to the table”.

The IOC has also requested an increase in services at the Whistler broadcast and media centres, said the Mayor.

Dave Cobb, VANOC’s executive vice president of revenue, marketing and communication, said in a statement, “we are actively working in partnership with the IOC and our partners to determine what the best method will be for addressing the need for more accommodation. Understandably, as we are still determining costs and the final resolution of the issue, we will not speculate at this time”, reports Pique News Magazine.

The request for more beds came after the debriefing from the Turin Winter Games.
