The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) ethics commission is studying a report on human rights violations in Iraq against its athletes. The commission will give its first report on the study to the IOC’s executive committee in the near future.
IOC vice president Thomas Bach rejects any expulsion of Iraq’s Olympic Committee. He said if there are sanctions against the organization, the athletes themselves would also be punished. Instead he said that Udai Hussein, son of Saddam Hussein and the person responsible for the human rights violations, should be divested of all Olympic activities. Only at a last resort should Iraq’s Olympic Committee be expelled, said Bach.
