International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge wants to change the Olympic charter to make it easier to throw sports out of the Olympic Games, said IOC insiders Friday.
Reuters reports that Rogge is tackling the issues behind closed doors at the IOC headquarters because a bid to drop modern pentathlon, softball and basketball from the Olympics was stonewalled by the IOC members in Mexico last year.
Under the charter if a sport is to be excluded it is given a seven-year notice period and the expulsion must be voted for by a two-thirds majority of IOC members at an IOC session.
The IOC has not thrown a sport out of the Games since 1936, but Rogge has made it clear the Olympics are at capacity with 28 sports, 300 events and 10,500 athletes.
