A lengthy doping investigation into Austrian biathlon and cross-country skiers and team heads has been launched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) an IOC official said Friday.
Reuters reports that the IOC’s three-person disciplinary commission met after the Turin 2006 Games to plan the investigation. The official said the commission, which includes IOC vice president Thomas Bach and executive board members Denis Oswald and Sergey Bubka, will work independently and will not meet with Austrian officials conducting their own investigation into the matter.
According to the official there was no urgency since Italian authorities have yet to pass on information regarding what had been taken during raids February 18 of the athletes’ accommodations. He said the process will take some time.
The Italian criminal probe is separate from the IOC’s inquiry.
