The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission has just completed three days of what it calls “positive” meetings with Turin 2006 organizers.
The commission reviewed the progress made by the organizing committee for the Turin 2006 Games and addressed the services that will be provided for the athletes, the International Federations, the National Olympic Committees, the media, spectators and sponsors.
Commission Chairman Jean-Claude Killy said the IOC was pleased to note that local and regional authorities are already considering legacy provisions to ensure that venues used during the Games will make a “healthy contribution to that future long after the Games have left the city”.
He said, “we have seen great progress here in Turin, with venue construction, infrastructure and city beautification advancing on track and the organization of the Games moving ahead well”.
He added, “since the full Coordination Commission visit in December last year, a solution has been found to the potential budget concerns, and the Organizing Committee has been given a fresh sense of direction and renewed purpose. The IOC has also been pleased to note improved cooperation by the local, regional and national government, with that cooperation delivering positive results”.
But he cautioned the organizers that by the commission’s next visit in November all venues and infrastructure must be finished in time for the final tests “that are vital to Olympic Games success”, and by November the Organizing Committee “should also be fully operational”, he said.
