IOC Calls Beijing 2008 Preparations On Schedule

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Kevan Gosper says the IOC is completely confident that the venues for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games will be completed on time.

A 20-member IOC Coordination Commission is in Beijing this week to observe preparations for Beijing’s 2008 Summer Games.

China began slowing construction last year following IOC concerns that facilities would be completed too early, adding to maintenance costs. It also cut the number of stadiums to be built to five to keep building costs below $2 billion.

On Tuesday the IOC team toured construction sites for the main stadium and the cube-shaped swimming centre.

Gosper also said Beijing’s heavy air pollution isn’t a concern. “We’ve been given very good advice for the environmental program. The Chinese are doing enough work”.
