The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Wednesday launched the bidding process for hosting the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012.
The schedule for the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games is as follows. March 6, 2008 the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are to inform the IOC of the names of their candidate cities. On June 19, 2008 they are to submit to the IOC the cities’ Candidature files. August 2008 a panel of experts are to propose a shortlist of Candidate Cities. In October 2008 the IOC Evaluation Commission is to submit its report to the IOC Executive Board. November 2008 the IOC Executive Board will be submitting its recommendation to the IOC members for a postal vote, and in December 2008 the host city for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012 will be announced
The Winter Youth Olympic Games will bring together about 1,000 athletes ages 14 to 18, and 500 officials.
According to the IOC the sports program will include the seven Winter Olympic sports on the program of the Sochi 2014 Games with a limited number of disciplines and events by sport that are of particular interest to the younger generation.
