India Announces 2010 Commonwealth Games Bid

The Times of India reports that India has decided to bid for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A day after Singapore withdrew from bidding for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Rhandir Singh, vice-president of the Commonwealth Games Federation and secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association, said India appreciates Singapore’s decision to withdraw from the bid, enabling India to make a strong presentation to host the Games in India.

He said that there should be no competition from two countries from the same continent to bid for international sporting events.

Hamilton Canada remains India’s only competitor.

The newspaper said it appeared India is one more step closer to hosting the Olympics.
