Now that New Delhi has won the right to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Sports Minister Vikram Verma said it would use the Games as a platform to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
Verma told reporters, “it is a very big thing for us that we won the bid by a big margin. Now we have to host the Commonwealth Games in such a way that it will help us bid successfully for the 2020 Olympics”.
And the Dutch City of Rotterdam is considering bidding for the 2016 or 2020 Summer Games. A survey has been added to Rotterdam’s municipal Web site asking visitors if Rotterdam should be a candidate for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. According to the poll, which is still underway, 68 per cent of respondents said yes, 30 per cent said no and two per cent weren’t sure.
Rotterdam has a special organization focusing on sport called “Rotterdam Topsport” which functions as a network organization in a “public-private partnership” with the city of Rotterdam, the sports world, the business community, the media, education and science.
According to the Web site, one of the organization’s main tasks is to supervise and support existing sporting events in Rotterdam and to attract new sports events, preferably with an international aura.
