In The News – Glasgow 2014, London 2012

The head of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, John Scott, resigned following allegations that he broke rules on gifts.

Organizers said Monday that Scott failed to declare an offer he accepted from a potential
Commonwealth Games supplier in a breach of policy.

Glasgow 2014 organizing committee chairman Robert Smith says Scott made an “error of judgement” and the board accepted his resignation.

Chief Operating Officer David Grevemberg is taking temporary charge of planning for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Athletes using social media at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games will have to follow rules issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

While the IOC “actively encourages” competitors to “post, blog and tweet their experiences”, the Associated Press reports the IOC warns that if rules are broken it can withdraw accreditation, shut down online operations, and start legal action for damages.

Athletes can’t us Twitter, Facebook or personal blogs for commercial or advertising purposes, or share videos filmed at Olympic venues.

Rules prohibit comments about opponents, using “vulgar or obscene words or images” or the five-ring Olympic symbol.

The IOC has codified the rules in the aftermath of violations during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, reports The Associated Press.
