If Beijing Wins 2008, London Will Bid For 2012

The British Olympic Associaton (BOA) has drawn up detailed proposals in its attempt to bring the 2012 Olympic Games to the country for the first time since 1948.

The association has presented ministers and the Greater London Authority, with a confidential 395-page document detailing the sites for the 29 sports and the Olympic village.

But the bid will only take place if Beijing, considered the front-runner for 2008, is awarded the 2008 Games.

BOA chief executive Simon Clegg met Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, to discuss the plans and said, “the mayor was very, very positive and we are delighted with his reaction. We now look forward to working with the Government and the Greater London Authority to move the process forward before determining whether to mount a bid for 2012.”.

A proposed 75,000 seat stadium in east London would be the centerpiece of the London bid. The main Olympic stadium and the Athletes’ Village would be in the Stratford area of the city.

London’s mayor has always insisted that he would back a bid in London only if it was based in the east of the city, bringing vital investment to one of the poorest areas.
