Reports say that Hungarian government officials voted to set aside $2 million for a committee to do a feasibility study on Hungary hosting the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, and to prepare an application.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban told the Hungarian State news agency MTI that hosting the Games is in the best interest of the nation.
Hungary is making its eighth bid to host the Olympics. Its last bid was for the 1960 Games, which were awarded to Italy.
