Hosting World Championships Could Help Olympic Bids

Madrid, one of nine cities bidding for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, has won the right to host the 2006 International Badminton Federation (IBF) World Championships, beating Aarhus Denmark.

Madrid will also host the Archery, Taekwondo, and Cycling World Championships in 2005 and the Field hockey Women’s World Cup in 2006.

These events could give the city a higher profile in its 2012 bid.

Meanwhile it was announced Monday that Glasgow will be hosting the 2007 world team badminton championships.

The event is expected to attract nearly 1000 players from 70 nations.

The tournament could help Glasgow’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and if London wins the right to host the 2012 Summer Games it could put Glasgow in a better position to host some of the spin-off events.
