A public prosecutor Thursday granted Greek sprinter Kostas Kenteris an extension of several days to prepare his testimony for questioning on doping charges. Kenteris was due to appear Thursday. A new date for the hearing was not immediately set.
A source told Reuters, “Kenteris asked for an extension of a few days before he testifies in front of the investigative magistrate. It has not yet been decided when he will appear before the magistrate”.
Kenteris and fellow Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou withdrew from the Athens Games last summer after missing drug tests at the athletes’ village and claiming they were injured in a motorcycle accident several hours later.
Thanou is due to testify separately next week. If found guilty by the court, the athletes could receive suspended jail sentences of a few days as all charges are misdemeanours, reports Reuters.
The sprinters’ coach Christos Tzekos faces similar charges and also a charge of importing banned substances.
The two sprinters were cleared of any wrongdoing by a Greek athletics commission in March.
