Costas Kenteris, Greece’s star sprinter, who withdrew from the Athens 2004 Games for allegedly avoiding a drug test due to a suspicious motorcycle accident, testified before prosecutor Spryos Mouzakitis for seven-and-a-half hours Monday. He had been summoned to testify on Friday but requested a postponement until after the Athens Games Closing Ceremony.
Kenteris said, “I spoke about the situation that has existed all these years. I testified with regard to everything I have lived through in the last few days, as I experienced them. I replied to all questions and spoke about everything I knew”.
When asked if he would race again he said, “I want to but I don’t know if and when I will race again”.
Kenteris and his lawyer didn’t reply to questions as to why he and the other Greek sprinter had missed the doping test and why the two had left the Olympic Village shortly after entering it on August 12, and the circumstances of the mysterious motorcycle accident that night.
His lawyer said that when the athletes entered the Village they encountered Greek and international officials and no one informed them they were wanted for a doping test.
The sprinters have denied using illegal substances.
