Greek Prosecutors Ask US Counterparts For Help

Prosecutors investigating why Greece’s top two sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou missed a drug test just before the Athens 2004 Games, have asked the help of their U.S. counterparts. In particular they have asked for information on BALCO, the U.S. Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative, suspected of having produced and sold athletes an undetectable anabolic steroid.

According to some reports a yet-unidentified Greek coach was in touch with BALCO, although there is speculation that the coach was Christos Tzekos, coach of the two Greek sprinters.

Three U.S. prosecutors who worked on the BALCO doping scandal have already forwarded information to their opposite numbers in Greece.

Prosecutors are also investigating the nutritional supplement businesses of Tzekos and will be interrogating him on Monday.

The two sprinters parted company with Tzekos after withdrawing from the Athens 2004 Games.
