Athens 2004 head Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki is quoted by AFP as saying that Greek President Costis Stephanopoulos supported plans by 2004 Games organizers to move the Olympic shot put competition from Athens to the Games’ ancient birthplace in Olympia.
According to the plan, which is subject to approval by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), only the men’s shot put event would be held at Olympia, following the tradition of the ancient Greek Olympics where only men were allowed to compete.
Women’s’ rights supporters have voiced their opposition to the plan.
Angelopoulos-Daskalaki said that the Greek President was enthusiastic about the plan’s realization and told a reporter that “no Greek would disapprove” of using the stadium at Ancient Olympia as part of next year’s Games.
