Greece’s Opposition Party Wants Athens 2004 Cost Update

Greece’s main conservative opposition party, the New Democracy party, wants the Greek government to disclose the exact cost of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

Twenty one New Democracy party deputies sent a letter to Parliament Speaker Apostolos Kalamanis insisting on an update from Athens 2004 head Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos and the deputy ministers of public order, sport and defence.

“We want to be informed about the economic data of the Athens 2004 organizing committee and the funds for Olympic Games security”, said New Democracy Deputy Marios Salmas, who monitors 2004 Olympic preparations for the party.

The government says its budget of $4.92 billion will not increase, but it has already agreed to a $1.57 billion loan from the European Investment Bank for Olympic projects.
