Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyianni told the Associated Press that Greece’s change of government was unlikely to disrupt Olympic preparations for the Summer Games.
The Mayor said, “all parties have agreed that this is a national issue, a common cause. By Greek standards there is rare unanimity on this”. She predicted there will be no changes in Athens’ Olympic Organizing Committee.
She added that “the final work must be to speed up the projects and make up for lost time. It is a top priority”.
Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge congratulated Costas Karamanlis, saying he had already met him on a number of occasions.
Rogge is going to Athens Saturday for talks with the new Prime Minister. He will be accompanied by the IOC’s Coordination Commission chairman Denis Oswald and Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli.
