One of Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara’s major goals is to further develop Tokyo by winning the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and to do this he announced that he will be seeking a third term in next spring’s election.
The Japanese Olympic Committee will decide in August whether Tokyo or Fukuoka will represent Japan in a bid for the 2016 Games.
Ishihara told reporters Monday, “if Tokyo wins the candidacy, there will be even more troublesome issues to deal with. I just can’t go and say ‘hey, whoever replaces me, it’s all yours’”.
If Tokyo wins the bid there are plans to build the main stadium on the waterfront around Chuo Ward’s Harumi district. Ishihara said last month, “it will be a symbol to show the world that Tokyo has fully matured”.
