Stevie Newns, a member of Wishaw’s 2006 Commonwealth Games contingent, said he believes that Glasgow has “about an 85 per cent chance” of winning the right to host the 2014 Games, and he’s calling on local people to support the bid.
According to a Lanarkshire publication, Newns, who is assistant coach of the national boxing squad, warmly welcomed the choice of seven optional sports which would be on the program should Glasgow’s bid be successful.
Newns said he is delighted that his sport has been recognized as an integral part of the Games and says Glasgow’s choices could lead to a Scottish gold rush if the city is successful in its bid. He said, “I think Glasgow has about an 85 per cent chance of getting the Games because we’ve already shown we’re able to put in world-class sports events, Edinburgh has had the Games before, and the city has been promoted so well because everyone involved is so up for it”.
He added, “the First Minister is right behind it and so is Frank Roy, our local MP, so we just need people to get behind the campaign and push our 2014 bid because it would be a real shot in the arm that Glasgow needs. Having been part of the Games in Melbourne, I think Scotland seems to be the front-runner”.
