Glasgow 2014 Has Security Risks – Report

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are on track, but according to a report by Audit Scotland, there are “risks to particular projects”.

Security was reportedly a particular concern due to the spiralling costs at previous sporting events. The report states “it is recommended that the Games security committee, led by the Scottish Government, commission work to understand these risks more fully. More work is needed to inform the procurement approach for security guards and equipment”.

The Guardian reports Audit Scotland also highlighted “concerns” by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) about one of three security firms previously considered, believing “it would not provide the most cost-effective security solution”.

Audit Scotland also found “particular risks” in delivering the Athletes Village and Hampden Park developments on budget and on time.

Despite the concerns, Audit Scotland found that the Games are progressing well, with 92 per cent of the milestones due for completion, and the rest “mostly insignificant”.

A Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee spokesman said, “we are pleased the progress report also recognizes that, with 70 per cent of infrastructure already in place, the risks around delivering Glasgow 2014 are less than for other Games”.
