Scotland’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games received official backing Tuesday night from MPs and Lords as Holyrood’s sport minister Patricia Ferguson presented Glasgow’s proposals for hosting the event and urged them to “back the bid”.
The Herald reports that while highlighting the potential benefits of a successful bid at a reception at Dover House, Ferguson urged Scottish MPs to take every opportunity to promote the country as the ideal location for the Commonwealth Games.
Scotland Office Minister David Cairns said, “Glasgow continues to be a very bright, vibrant city. But if the Games go the way we want them to, it will be a tremendous boost to the renaissance of the city”.
Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council said, winning the Games would help “inspire people in sports they never thought about doing before and will also involve 15,000 volunteers”.
