Former Olympic swimmer Klaus Steinbach was elected head of Germany’s National Olympic Committee (NOK) for a four-year term amid speculation that the sports-medicine doctor’s similarities and good relationship with International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge could improve Germany’s chances of landing the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
The German Olympic Committee’s main function under Steinbach will be to oversee the bidding process among the five German cities vying to become the German candidate for the 2012 Games.
Upon his election Steinbach said, “The April 12 decision in Munich should be a media event. The public has to become more involved with the NOK. That’s something we will see to”.
