German Minister Investigated Regarding Leipzig’s 2012 Olympic Bid

German Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, a former mayor of Leipzig, is being investigated on suspicion of aiding the personal enrichment of people involved in Leipzig’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, reports Reuters.

Tiefensee was mayor of Leipzig when it bid for the 2012 Games and is accused of indirectly helping people profit from the bid in his duties as head of the city administration.

A faxed statement by Transport Ministry spokesman Rainer Lingenthal, said “the suspicion raised by the prosecutor’s office is explicitly not claiming any kind of personal gain for the then mayor Tiefensee himself. The suspicions are baseless”.

Lingenthal said the matter had to be cleared up quickly to prevent any damager to the minister’s reputation.
