Following a meeting between Leipzig’s mayor Wolfgang Tiefensee and Germany’s Interior Secretary Otto Schily, a decision was made to investigate Pentacom, a company affiliated with Leipzig’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games to do marketing and communications, on alleged irregularities.
Dirk Thärichen, former manager of Leipzig’s 2012 bid, was once an employee of Pentacom.
The investigation will look into unfair business practices and arrangements with Pentacom in the day-to-day running of the bid.
Meanwhile it was announced Thursday that Hansjörg Kunze will be appointed head of the team putting together Rostock’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic water sports.
The former president Haraki Lochotzke withdrew from the post because of his state security service activity.
Kunze won a bronze medal during the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul in the 5000 metre race.
Kunze had signaled his willingness to accept the position, which will become official at the beginning of November.
