On decision day April 12 Leipzig, one of the five cities bidding to become the German candidate for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, will release tens of thousands of multi-coloured balloons into the sky. The balloons will have the slogan “Olympia liegt in der luft” – (Olympia is in the air).
Leipzig Olympic official Burkhard Jung said that Leipzig wants to thank everyone who helped and supported it’s bid.
The balloons will carry the colours of the five German bid cities, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Leipzig.
There will also be a special concert.
And on the Olympic mile pastries and cakes will be available to the public.
At 12:45 Leipzig citizens will listen to the Central German radio broadcast of the German candidate city.
Meanwhile, the Nordelbische Evangelisch-Lutherische Church has announced it is supporting Hamburg’s bid for the German candidacy.
Should Hamburg become host city for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games all church buildings will be open during the event.
Wolfgang Teichert, director of the Protestant academy Nordelbische, said there will be discussion around Hamburg’s bid about the ratio between church and sport.
Also, about three million people in North-Rhine/Westphalia came out in support of Dusseldorf’s bid for the candidacy, including several hundred thousand pupils.
In Cologne all the students wore coloured T-shirts and more than 1,000 pupils formed the Olympic logo.
In Bonn 1,000 children formed the Olympic rings.
About 10,000 sport associations took part in the action day in support of Dusseldorf’s bid.
There were other events around the entire North-Rhine/Westphalia region.
