Georgia To Apply For 2018 Winter Olympic Games

Georgian National Olympic Committee President Jansough Bagrationi said Thursday that Georgia will apply for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Borjomi-Bakuriani.

He said, “early in 2006 Georgia gave an application for holding the Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Borjomi-Bakuriani where there are all conditions for organizing the international sportive forum. We understood that we couldn’t have the right to host the Olympic Games in Georgia at the first try, but we showed our wish to hold the Olympic Games in Borjomi-Bakuriani.

“When the candidate of Borjomi-Bakuriani and other countries were rejected, we decided to support Sochi because Georgia believes that the Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi will promote peace and stability in the Caucasus”.

Bagrationi said that Georgia has done much in recent years to develop and Alpine skiing and winter sports compound in Bakuriani and modernizing the infrastructure of Bakuriani and Borjomi.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said, “from the very beginning Georgia supported Sochi as a candidate for hosting the winter Olympic Games 2014 because we think that this will contribute to developing the entire Caucasian region and strengthening stability there. I believe that the Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi will help rivet the international community’s attention to the Caucasian region and the peaceful settlement of frozen conflicts”.
