Garbage Activists To Protest Toronto Bid In Lausanne

The Globe and Mail reports that opponents of Toronto’s plan to ship its garbage to the Adams Mine in Northern Ontario, are sending ten activists, including native leaders, to Lausanne Switzerland on Friday.

They plan to tell the International Olympic Committee that Toronto doesn’t deserve to host the 2008 Summer Games because of environmental concerns.

Carol McBride, Grand Chief of the Algonquin Nations Secretariat, said “we don’t want to do harm to Toronto, but we have to get the word out and to let the world know we’re in crisis”.

The finalists for the 2008 bid will be announced on Tuesday, August 29 in Lausanne Switzerland.

Toronto City Council’s final vote on the plan takes place in October.
