GamesBids Roundup – Sochi 2014, Innsbruck 2012, London 2012

Sochi’s budget for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games is now estimated at $1.1 billion, thanks to the signing of new sponsors and partners. It’s more than has been spent on any Winter Olympic Games. Alexandra Savina of the Sochi 2014 organizing committee said that the organizing committee’s prime objective is to organize a unique, successful and innovative Games which will exceed all expectations and express the character of the new Russia. More than 27,000 people from 80 countries will participate in the Games and more than 600,000 spectators are expected to attend.

Innsbruck 2012 has revealed 15 pictograms representing each discipline at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games which takes place January 13-22, 2012. The shape of the pictograms encapsulates both the athletic and anatomical characteristics of each of the respected sports. The pictograms will appear on objects such as forms and sign posts, acting as a fast, language-free form of communication representing each of the individual disciplines. About 1,058 athletes are set to participate in the event.

Denis Oswald, head of the International Olympic Committee-s (IOC) coordination commission, inspected the London 2012 cycling arena Thursday as work was finished on the timber track. Oswald said the track is “yet another impressive sign of the progress that is being made” in overall preparations. London organizers say the 6,000-seat velodrome will be completed early next year. Sebastian Coe, head of London 2012, joined Oswald on the tour. Coe told Reuters, “I think this is a jaw-dropping venue. It is going to be one of the iconic venues of the Games. I think it’s beautiful from the outside, it is stunning inside, it’s intimate and it’s going to be a legacy for British cycling for many years to come”.
