Fukuoka, in the south west of Japan, announced its bid for the 2016 Summer Games on Friday. Fukuoka is competing against Tokyo to become Japan’s candidate and says its revamped bid plan is now more compact.
According to the bid most of the 37 competition venues would be in the city’s three coastal districts and 24 venues would be within a radius of 10 kilometres of the athlete’s village, reports Kyodo.
The re-vamped bid plans show that shooting and some first-round games of the soccer tournament would be held outside Fukuoka Prefecture.
Earlier plans called for the city to stage the events in a wider area with competition venues scattered over all prefectures on the island of Kyushu, running counter to the recent worldwide trend of planning a compact Olympic bid, reports Kyodo.
Fukuoka Mayor Hirotaro Yamasaki will submit the city’s bid to Japan’s Olympic Committee (JOC) on April 24.
The JOC is choosing its 2016 Games bid representative on August 30. Fukuoka and Tokyo are the only Japanese candidates after Sapporo withdrew earlier this year.
