Fukuoka Japan Considers 2016 Or 2020 Olympic Bid

Fukuoka, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, is considering a bid for the 2016 or 2020 Summer Olympic Games, said its mayor Hirotaro Yamasaki Thursday.

Yamazaki said his city, located 558 miles from Tokyo, “will seek an Olympic Games that are on a realistic scale for Fukuoka.

“We have the know-how when it comes to staging international sporting events and believe our connections within both the International Olympic Committee and the Japanese Olympic Committee give us an advantage”.

When Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara announced Tuesday that Tokyo was bidding for the 2016 or 2020 Games he said that Fukuoka “has too small a capacity” and “may have difficulties guaranteeing security”.
