Former Nuclear Reactor Site Won’t Affect London 2012

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Wednesday that the public disclosure at the London Assembly regarding the former nuclear reactor at London 2012’s proposed Olympic Park would not affect the city’s right to host the 2012 Games. IOC officials appear satisfied that the experimental university reactor was decommissioned in 1982, despite renewed calls for a fresh radiological examination of the East London site, reports The Times.

London’s Conservative party demand an immediate environmental survey and denied London 2012 claims that they were “scare mongering” by persistently raising questions about the site.

Mike Lee, a London 2012 spokesman said, “there is no ongoing issue here and there is certainly no need for any further environmental assessment. All of the necessary investigations and evaluations have been carried out over the years”.

Queen Mary College, London, has said that it housed the reactor at the proposed Olympic Park but it was certified as dismantled by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate in November 1983.

Meanwhile The Times reports that the Paris 2012 bid team was informed about the site but declined to use the information before last week’s host city vote. According to the newspaper the tip-off to Paris came about three weeks ago.
