The Independent reports that fire safety at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games is in jeopardy because, according to a report, plans to revamp emergency services are in disarray.
A “controversial” 202 million pound FiReControl project, designed to improve the Fire and Rescue Service which was to be in operation by 2009, has been delayed, is over budget, and might not improve safety, says the report.
Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Communities and Local Government Select Committee describe the project as a catalogue of “poor judgement and mismanagement”.
The delays reportedly mean that the crucial command centres may not be in operation until after the Games are over.
The Fire Brigade Union has called for the project to be scrapped reports The Independent, and said that guarantees cannot be given over safety.
The project may cost 38 million pounds more before its hoped-for start next year and the MPs say viable alternatives will be needed if the project slips further behind.
