An evaluation report released today by the Brazil Olympic Committee concludes that both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are capable of hosting the 2012 Olympic Games. The two cities hope to win the Brazilian nomination and go on to face international competition to win the 2012 Olympic bid.
The report is based on documents submitted by the bids and visits conducted by the 12-member evaluation team over the past two months. Thirty-four Committee members will refer to the report when they vote for the winner on July 7, just in time for the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) application deadline of July 15..
Rio de Janeiro was selected to host the 2007 Pan Am Games last year and many believe it is the favorite in this national Olympic race.
The eventual Brazilian winner will face several international bids including Paris, London and New York. Brazil’s “U.S.-friendly” time-zone may make it an attractive bid for the IOC and NBC who recently signed a multi-billion dollar television deal for the 2012 Games.
