Earthquake Jolts Athens 2004 Games

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale centred about 55 kilometres NNW of Athens occurred at 3:38 p.m. local time in Greece.

Giorgos Stavrakakis, a seismologist with the Athens Geodynamic Institute, said, “there is no reason to panic. It was a very small quake”.

Athens residents who felt the quake reported it as an almost imperceptible shake and many said they felt nothing.

Police said they had no reports of injuries or damage to buildings or any of the facilities of the Athens Games.

Earthquakes are common in Greece, one of the most seismically active countries in Europe.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) took out insurance against terrorism or natural disasters, such as earthquakes.

An earthquake also hit Nagano, Japan during the 1998 Winter Games, causing no major damage.
