Toronto city councillor Brian Ashton, chairman of the city’s Economic Development Committee, said Toronto’s Olympic bid shouldn’t be affected by its decision to dump its trash in the old Adams’ Mine pit in Northern Ontario.
Ashton said “it’s not even going to make a ripple in the bid for the Olympics. There isn’t a city in the world that doesn’t face similar difficulties with waste”. He added “I think the dump plan opponents are grasping for gold medals to try and strangle Toronto’s bid. It’s not going to work”.
Toronto city council is to vote on a contract next week with Rail Cycle North to haul Toronto’s garbage north for 20 years, starting in 2002.
