Did L.A. Jump The Gun For 2016?

When Los Angeles announced September 7 it was bidding for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games the San Francisco Chronicle reports the city might have entered a race when there is no race.

According to United States Olympic Committee (USOC) spokesman Darryl Seibel, “it would be premature for any city to formally announce its intentions. It would be premature for a city to spend money in support of a bid when in fact we have not yet made a decision on whether to bid”.

Seibel said, “we’re going to take some time and assess various things that impact the bid process. There are a variety of factors we’re going to look into and assess how they might impact a U.S. city in its bidding”.

Meanwhile, after San Francisco’s Mayor said Thursday there was a “strong possibility” that talks would produce a formal proposals from the region to host the 2016 Games, Anne Cribbs, head of the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee for the 2012 Summer Games said, “the key thing for the USOC is to try to see who can win in the international arena. That would be my biggest concern about bringing the Olympic Games to the U.S.” She added that 2012 may have been the U.S.’s time but 2016 may be different”.
