Associated Press reports that the British government has delayed a decision on whether to support a London bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games by one week because it will instead discuss possible war with Iraq.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s cabinet had been scheduled to announce Thursday whether to proceed with a bid, but officials said Wednesday a decision would be put off until next week.
British Olympic Association chief executive Simon Clegg said, “at a time of potential international conflict, we understand that other issues of a higher priority must take precedence. We believe that a one-week delay in any decision should not adversely effect any bid’s chances of success”.
The bid deadline is July 15 and the International Olympic Committee will choose the host city for the 2012 Summer Games in 2005.
