A decision on whether the Olympic torch will pass through Taiwan on its way to the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games won’t be revealed until April, Li Weiyi, spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, told a press briefing Wednesday.
He said, “the question whether the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay covers Taiwan or not will be answered in April when the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games unveils the relay map”.
Li has said compatriots from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao had given their support to Beijing’s Olympic bid and that hosting the Games was a “grand event” for the entire Chinese nation.
China has offered to allow the torch relay pass through Taiwan, but officials there have said that is acceptable only as long as the island is part of the torch’s international route.
Meanwhile Beijing 2008 reports the China National Philatelic Corporation will issue post cards decorated with the Beijing Olympic emblem and mascots on the 500-day countdown to the opening of the 2008 Games, which takes place August 8, 2008.
