The Hungarian Government voted unanimously to provide all the necessary funding and support required by Debrecen, called Europe’s “City of Youth”, should it win the bid to host the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Debrecen’s municipal government voted unanimously last week to provide all the necessary infrastructure and funding for the Games.
According to a media release Debrecen’s bid team is confident that the city’s long history of combining youth sports and education will make a strong case to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which selected the host city in February 2008.
Pal Schmitt, President of the Hungarian National Olympic Committee and a member of the IOC said, “I couldn’t think of a better place than Debrecen to bring the Youth Olympic Games. Debrecen has proven its extraordinary abilities by numerous successful organizations of world sporting events. This would be a perfect fit and logical next step for the authorities who have done so much to bring the youth closer to sport”.
Mihaly Orendi, head of sports for the City of Debrecen said, “Hungary’s city of youth, Debrecen, is ready to welcome the youth of the world and can do so now in the knowledge that it has the full financial and political backing of my government”.
